Rae Crowther Escape Sled ESC
ESCAPE SLED – The Escape Sled offers distinct training advantages for Defensive players. There is no other sled that offers the defender so many tools.
INNOVATIVE ESCAPE PADS
The Escape pads are the only pads in the market that allow a defender to work against a double team block. The large wing pad(s), acting like a secondary blocker, allow the defender to work their elbow down, minimize the secondary defender’s hands, while the front of the pad and opposite wing pad act as the primary blocker. The Escape pads can also emulate an offensive player “holding” their opponents. The Escape pads force the defensive players to strike with “inside hands” as the pads encapsulate their arms. The large “wing pads” keep the players trapped or hemmed in, and then they must fight to “escape” the pads (i.e., hold). There is a “Chest Plate” built into the pads for the players to grab handles or gain control. Also, the unique pad plate and coil spring attachment allows the pad plate to flex in all directions, right left, up, or down, so the defender can attack the pad and still get their head into the gap.
HOW DOES THE SLED WORK?
The coach can push the pads forwards (or backwards) at the players, simulating the movement of the offensive linemen at the snap (the pads don’t fire at the players, they simply move). Each pad, when triggered, will travel approx. 12” inches. The players then “react” to the movement of the Escape pads (as they would a lineman). Obviously, the coaching point is for the players not to get fooled by cadence and head movement, but to be fast reacting to the linemen’s movement, with proper hand placement (inside the pad), and then work “Escape” to the ball carrier or QB. The players can leverage or drive the sled. To drive the sled players must overcome the weight of the sled plus the weight of the coach. The defensive players can work on reaction time and “get off.” For instance, a coach can trigger the pads forward to simulate a run (or trigger the pads backwards to simulate a pass read). How does this work? The coach stands on the sled platform and has a Reaction Bar in front of him. The coach can use cadence and head movement to fool the players (drawing them off sides) but the pads won’t move until the coach pushes or pulls on the Reaction Bar.
